Responding to the Call
How do we respond when Jesus calls us? When we read the account of Jesus first calling some of the disciples in Matthew’s Gospel (4 v18-22), we’re reminded that the disciples left their nets at once and followed him. It is an instant reaction and the disciples do not question Jesus.
In John’s Gospel (1 v37) we read of disciples following Jesus when they are told that he is the Lamb of God, The Messiah. They ask no questions, do not hesitate and they follow him. They leave their income, businesses, homes, comfort, families and friends for Jesus. How liberating!
Jesus still calls people today – us! His message is no different to the one he gave to the fishermen on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. For some, it is specifically seen as a vocation, using their skills and gifts to bring the Kingdom of God to earth. For others, who may not think they have a vocation in the ‘traditional’ sense, calling is exercised in the small things: a job well done, a kind word at the photocopier, volunteering to work extra to cover for a poorly colleague, training for other responsibilities. The list is endless…..
Jesus is present in every call, the question is, how quickly do you respond when you hear Him call?
