What moral decisions do you make every day?
Lent – Week 4 – Compass
When filming the series of video interviews that we conducted for the Faith at Work course, we asked everyone what challenges they faced in their working or everyday lives. Some of their answers are in the video clips included in the course material, not just in this week’s material on MORAL COMPASS but in the other five sessions too.
Text clips from four more interviews are included below as thought starters for reflection:
What moral or ethical decisions do I face every day?
How do I respond to them?
What help do I need in doing so?
The third question arises from several of those we interviewed telling us that they didn’t receive any guidance from their church on work-related issues. This is one of the reasons we produced this course! However, if you’re in that situation and want to get in touch with us, please do so via Twitter and we’ll gladly see what resources we can offer or find for you.
Paul – HR Director
“It would be difficult to do the job without an ethical role, and operate in a responsible way. Your employee is your most valuable asset, how you treat them, how you work with them in the good times and the not so good times demonstrates in the interest of the employee and the employer.”

Jo – owner of a Murder Mystery company
“Being self-employed it’s harder to have an ethical balance you are responsible for”

Julian – owner of an ethical energy company
“Something had to be done with dwindling energy sources, impact on the planet, destruction of wildlife habitats, depletion of resources and the emission of C02. It wasn’t a leap of faith – the writing was on the wall…time was right. Here we are four and a half years later we have staff of 24 people locally, got into the future jobs fund, helping young people get into work, creating jobs and drawing people gaining skills and creating jobs and drawing in people from all industry locally, employ members of my family, and large parts of other families and it’s a close knit company. We all have the ethic it’s the right thing to do, not only commercially and strategically in terms of the rising cost of fossil fuels and the problems arising from fuel poverty, but also globally and environmentally it’s the right thing to do. Surround myself with people who think it is the right thing to do. And a moral stance of the company is to try and do the best thing for customers as well.”

Terry – pig farmer
“It’s very difficult in the industry at the moment with feed prices. Unless we see a massive rise in pig prices none of it will stack up. Feed prices are very high this year; hope when harvest is in prices may ease slightly. World market now, prices are through the roof – drought in America, Russia had a poor harvest, food prices are going to go up, it is extremely difficult, though UK grain will have surplus. People need to make the choice of eating better quality meat and eating less. Everybody is used to buying very cheap and low grade food. Bargain prices, or assume it’s bargain prices. It’s got to stop. People are starving in the world and yet more are eating twice as much as they need.”
