The Power of One
Lent – Week 4 – Compass
When faced with many of the big issues that need changing in our world, we often feel inadequate. However, we needn’t feel that we can’t make a difference.
I first saw the picture below in a church in former East Berlin, when those who came to and from church were observed and photographed by the secret service based at the top of a nearby apartment block. It reads “Many small people taking steps in many small places can change the history of the world“.
Change happened there and it can happen where you are too, and it can happen with all those big issues….. Never under-estimate the power of one person’s contribution.
Even in the current global pandemic, one person can have an effect, simply by our actions or lack of them. Others than us may be the scientists who develop a vaccine, but each of us can do our bit to prevent the spread of the virus, to help the vulnerable, to encourage the lonely…..
Released in 1994, a short video called ‘The Power of One’ combines evocative visuals with a moving original score by Academy Award winner Hans Zimmer. It featured historical and contemporary persons who’ve impacted the world to illustrate that each of us, working individually or as a group, can make a difference. Whether it’s taking a stand against encroaching tanks in China, bulldozers in the rainforest, advocating peaceful resistance in India, or changing things in our workplace or ‘our own backyard’, the video celebrates the power of the individual to effect lasting change. Copyright doesn’t allow us to reproduce it. However, a 1’ 41” trailer can be viewed here
The fact that there are a number of other videos with the same title emphasises the fact that even one person can make a change in the world. One other worth watching is here. This is slightly longer at 4minutes 22seconds but has a mix of significant historical events and everyday, contemporary images reflecting the daily lives many of us live. It is set to a moving song soundtrack by Bomshel
Be inspired to take action….
